Alberta Announces New Local Food Legislation

The Government of Alberta has introduced Bill 7, the Supporting Alberta’s Local Food Sector Act. The proposed legislation is intended to raise the profile of Alberta’s local food producers and processors, recognize the growing consumer demand for locally produced food, and create opportunities to help grow the industry.

The proposed legislation includes the creation of an Alberta Local Food Week, the appointment of a Local Food Council to identify options to help address challenges affecting growth in the local food sector, and the adoption of existing federal organic standards for organic products produced and marketed within Alberta.
